White Pine Trail and Marsh Area
Tour 1 length: 0.5 mile
This tour begins in a grassy meadow south of the Visitors Center. Scarboro Creek runs alongside and leads to the Marsh Area. Springtime walkers will be greeted by the sweet aroma coming from the Magnolia Garden on the slope above the meadow. The bright red berries of the Marsh Area collection of hollies will treat fall and winter visitors. Walkers in all seasons will enjoy the "trees with knees" (bald cypress) in the marsh and the Central China Collection of tree specimens that are found in remote areas of China.
The White Pine Trail begins just up the hill from the Marsh Area. Walkers will traverse a winding trail through an eminent stand of tall eastern white pine trees - some were killed by the Southern Pine Beetle epidemic in 2003 and stand as dead reminders of this event. The American beech trees along the path will stand out in the winter months, as many of their faded-orange fall leaves are retained until spring. The Magnolia Garden and Crabapple Orchard are just some of the sights as the trail wends its way back to the Visitors Center.
